Multimodal noninvasive approaches for diagnosing neuropathophysiology across the life span

📚I will describe recent advances and opportunities in multimodal noninvasive approaches for diagnosing neuropathophysiology in patients with neurological disorders across the entire life span from fetus to the elderly population. Stimulation and activation of brain networks are useful for revealing the nature of the abnormality. I will review traditional and new methods for stimulation and modulation of neuronal networks. The new approaches include uses of multichannel TMS and focused ultrasound. Brain activity at rest and during and after activation can be measured with a millisecond resolution using one or both of two techniques - EEG and MEG. I will describe recent developments for recording the electrophysiological activity of the brain in fetus in utero, newborns and infants, and adolescents to adults including the elderly population. These new approaches are creating exciting opportunities for improving the diagnosis and possibly the treatment of neurological patients. The modern approaches are becoming easier to use and more cost-effective for wide-spread use worldwide.
